Monotype Fonts.

Keep Fonts Forever

The Keep Fonts Forever feature allows users to retain access to fonts marked as production in Monotype Fonts, even when a foundry decides to remove them from the Monotype Fonts library. This ensures that users will not lose access to these fonts and can continue using them indefinitely, regardless of any changes made by the foundry.

  • When a font or font family is scheduled for de-release, a yellow inline notification will appear alongside each font and family row across the platform. This notification will appear on the Browse, Font, Family, Font Set, Synced Fonts, and Favorites pages. In the event of a partial family de-release, the notification will still appear at the family level.

  • The notification will not be shown on web project or digital ad pages.

  • If there are de-released fonts in a font list, the number of de-released fonts will be visible at the top of that font list. If the font list is marked as production or contains no de-released fonts, this number will not appear.

  • De-release notifications and View links will not be shown for fonts marked as production.

  • Each notification on font and family rows will include a View link.

  • Clicking on the View link will trigger a modal that provides additional information about the de-released fonts. This information includes:

    • The de-release (or “expiry”) date

    • Style names

    • Various actions, like adding to the library, finding similar fonts, or adding all styles to a production asset.

  • When the modal is opened from the family row, it will display a comprehensive list of all de-released fonts that are scheduled to be removed from that font family. The same modal can also be accessed via the View link on the font row.

  • The modal will display a list of all de-released fonts and their respective expiry dates. It will also include Add to, Similar, and Ignore CTAs.

    • Clicking the Add to CTA (which is only shown to companies with production fonts enabled) will open an Add to modal showing all production assets to which that font can be added.

    • Clicking the Similar CTA will redirect the user to the Browse page, where they can find similar fonts.

    • Clicking the Add to all CTA (which is only shown to companies with production fonts enabled) will open an Add to modal, which will display all the assets to which the user can add de-released fonts from that family.

In this modal, fonts in the modal are sorted by their expiry dates, with those being de-released soon listed first.

  • When working with de-released production fonts, users will maintain access to all the same functionalities as before the de-release, including Search, Add to, Sync, and Download.

  • Any font or family that is marked as production and scheduled for de-release can still be assigned to the customer—its usage will not be impacted.

  • If a user wants to continue using fonts that have been de-released, they have the option to add those fonts to any production asset, thereby labeling them production fonts.

Monotype App.

Version 6.4.1

Auto-activation plugin for Adobe InDesign

  • Updates to plugin configuration management, easing out the mechanism of these user flows. Once auto activation is in place, the user has the ability to manipulate which versions of Adobe InDesign they need activated. The user can now also turn off auto activation after updating to the latest version of the app.

  • Added prompts to assist users with migrating to the new plugin and feature set.

  • Revamp of manual activation workflows to provide an easy-to-use interface.

  • Improved auto-activation efficiency, which works in tandem with manual activation.

  • Manual fallback for mismatch in format. Users are notified when:

    • The information detected is incomplete for auto activation.

    • The fonts detected are legacy TrueType fonts for which OpenType features are not present.

    • Those detected are missing curious information.

  • Role-based access control and manual activation fallback for users who only have access to specific lists.

    • Auto activation works for the fonts that you have access to. Users are also informed when they try to activate fonts they don’t have access to.

  • Request access flows for imported fonts.

    • Users are prompted to access request access to all fonts manually; these fonts are then activated automatically the next time they open the document.

  • Error notifications when the source document sends across incorrect activation information.

  • Users on older versions of macOS and Adobe InDesign can click the "reset app" button to reinstate the original flows.

Improved visibility across Monotype Fonts ecosystem

  • Production fonts are now visible on the desktop app as well as the web app, ensuring users are aware of font usage and compliance across the entire Monotype Fonts ecosystem.

Stability, usability, and security bug fixes

Font version management

  • In the “My Library” section, users will see a "New version(s) available" link on rows of fonts with new versions, allowing them to update those fonts to the latest version.

  • Clicking the "New version(s) available" link on font rows will open a new modal showing all version details and giving the option to select your desired version and proceed with updating the selected font.

  • When users add a font or a font family to a font list for the first time and do not select a specific font version, the latest version will be added by default.

  • Users who would prefer to select a version other than the most recent should click on the “Manage versions” dropdown and make a specific selection before clicking the “Add to” button.

  • “Manage versions” link appear for each font in the font rows under the “Sync” dropdown on the family, browse, synced, and favorites pages.

  • While syncing the font list, only the version of the font that the user has added will get synced.

  • The "New version(s) available" link will only be available on family rows of font list pages.

  • The "New version(s) available" link will only appear when there is a version update for the particular font format added to the font list since new versions are distinct to formats and may not be released at the same time.

  • The new font version modal shows details like the version number, the nature of the updates to that font, and more.

  • Version details will only appear for styles for which more than one version is available, and the "Manage versions" link will only appear on font list pages if version details are available. Font version history will be available on the font family page, with the ability to add any version (whether that’s the latest version or an older version) to a list.

  • Version details will not be available for imported fonts.

  • Version details will be available for any custom/add-on fonts

The "New version available" and “Manage versions” options are visible to the following groups:

  • The owner of the font set in question

  • Users who have been granted "owner" access

  • Super admins

Search by image using "WhatTheFont" technology

  • Integration of popular "WhatTheFont" tool as a new search and discovery feature in Monotype Fonts.

  • Users may access this feature by clicking the camera icon on the dashboard

  • Functionality allows users to search for fonts in the Monotype Fonts library using a search by image mechanism.

  • Users can upload an image from their device, drag and drop, or enter a URL to commence the search process.

  • Users are able to then select a portion of the image to focus the identification process on a particular area. Users can also rotate or crop the image if needed.

  • The image is scanned and the user is presented with a set of results that either completely match the font in their image or are closely related in terms of characteristics of the typeface.

  • The results are also specific to any of the subscribed channels the user has.

  • Users are able to save the font(s) to a list or favorite them. Alternatively, the fonts can be set to "sync" and put into use immediately.

NB:

  • CCJK fonts are currently not supported in this feature.

  • Fonts that are not part of Monotype Fonts’ library are currently excluded from this feature.

  • Fonts imported to the library by the user are also excluded.

Production font management for companies moving to a hierarchy structure

This update is for companies that want to enable hierarchy on their existing account. When they move to a hierarchy structure, their production fonts will now seamlessly transfer to their default division with no need for manual intervention. This ensures that you don’t have to go through the tedious process of manually re-marking production fonts to the correct division after moving to a hierarchy structure. This change further streamlines workflows and font management processes.

Differentiate between custom and default divisions

Visual clues have been added to the ‘Division’ tab and left panel to help you differentiate between custom-made divisions and default divisions.

March, 2023

New AI-powered tags

The tagging function remains the most utilized feature among Monotype users searching for and discovering fonts. This release sees the addition of AI-powered tags to Monotype search. We also introduced these fun and creative tags:

Enhanced role management for single sign-on (SSO) setup

With this update to the “Users” tab, admins have greater customization ability for roles within the SSO environment. Administrators can now reassign user roles, superseding any previously mapped SSO user roles.

Updates made on the “Users” tab will also persist after the session expires, which was not previously the case. Before this change, all changes made on the "Users" tab would be lost when the session timed out, with SSO always taking precedence. Keeping user role assignments up to date streamlines management of user roles and permissions.

Introducing domain-driven SSO mapping

This feature update allows companies who have enabled the Company Hierarchy feature to take advantage of more efficient domain-driven mapping options. Company administrators with hierarchy-enabled structures are no longer restricted to SSO grouping at the active directory level. Instead, they can easily activate and utilize domain-based SSO mapping by enabling the domain mapping option on the settings page.

When the domain mapping option has been activated, all team and user mappings will be displayed based on their respective domains. This feature offers administrators greater flexibility by allowing them to efficiently manage their team and user mappings in a domain-based environment.

For existing companies, here’s what you can expect when an admin switches from an active directory group mapping view to domain-based mapping:

  • On your login pages, you will see divisions of where you are mapped by active directory groups and domains.

  • You will only be able to log into divisions where you are mapped by domain, and will not be able to log into divisions where you are mapped by ad groups.

  • Onboarding default domain mapping should be the same as active directory default mapping.

  • After existing companies switch from active directory group mapping to domain-based mapping, the domain mapping field may appear blank until you log in for the first time. This occurs because mapping has not yet been established.

Comprehensive data drilldowns in usage tab

We have improved the functionality of our ‘Usage’ section to enhance the user experience. More refined drilldowns create a clearer, more comprehensive view of usage data.

Within the ‘Usage’ section, the ‘People’ tab now provides a cleaner drilldown of WebKit downloads, with the ability to see web project names and their respective download counts per user. This makes it easier to analyze and understand WebKit download metrics, so you can make more informed decisions about your web projects.

In addition, you can now export all WebKit user data, including usernames, emails, web projects, and download counts.

Other capabilities added with this release

  • EULA acceptance for Monotype Library Subscription (MLS) users on Monotype Fonts: If you are an MLS user migrating to Monotype Fonts, you will not need to accept the end-user license agreement (EULA) before accessing the Monotype Fonts platform.

  • Expired accounts blocked for greater platform security and compliance: When a user's account reaches its expiration date, they will no longer be able to log in. Blocking attempts to log into expired accounts enhances security by ensuring that only authorized users can access our platform.

  • Authentication provider moved from legacy database to microservice: Our authentication system has moved from a legacy database to a modern microservice architecture. The new microservice uses the latest technologies and best practices, ensuring the security of your data while increasing reliability and scalability.

  • Optimized SSO tab: Introducing our updated SSO tab—now 40% faster! We've optimized performance for a more seamless and secure experience.

  • No extra charge for add on fonts marked as production: Because you’ve already paid for add on fonts (or custom fonts), you will no longer be charged for add on fonts that are marked as production fonts using the production font tracking feature.

  • One variable font on production to be counted as five production fonts: Variable fonts can be used in five different ways. With this release, one variable font marked as production via the production font tracking feature is equivalent to five production fonts. The versatility of variable fonts makes them an inherently versatile and valuable addition to any font collection.

Monotype Fonts.

New AI-driven Monotype Tags enhance the discovery experience

  • 19 new Monotype Tags let you search for typefaces by mood and feel.

  • The Tags are built using our AI/ML engine, meaning that description-led search results are more accurate and relevant than ever before.

  • Monotype Tags will be the first suggestions shown when using the search bar.

  • The search bar will suggest relevant Monotype Tags if you search for a synonym. For instance, if you search for "Friendly," the "Casual" Tag will be suggested.

  • Monotype Tags results will be automatically sorted based on best-match relevancy instead of popularity, so the most relevant results always appear first.

  • You can combine multiple Monotype Tags for a more specific set of results. Once a Monotype Tag is applied, only the available matching tags are displayed for selection.

Shared Library for Company Admins

  • The new Shared Library will give better visibility and control to Company Admins on their library structure.

  • Any asset that is shared with at least one more person than the creator will become part of the Shared Library, and Company Admins will be able to view and manage those assets.

  • Company Admins will be able to search for any asset by name and filter shared assets by asset type and asset creator.

  • Asset hierarchy will be shown for all assets (even if the parent asset is not a shared asset) to give Admins better visibility.

  • Admins can modify access to shared assets from the Shared Library tabular view, or click on the asset names and manage them from the asset page. This includes modifying access, editing details, removing fonts, copying, subsetting, etc.

  • Currently, Company Admins will not be able to move or add fonts to these assets.

Additional updates:

  • The custom date filter on the "Usage" tab will only show months and years.

  • Upon company expiration or trial expiration, all company users will be logged out of the web and desktop apps automatically on next refresh.

  • Invite users is being rate limited, with a limit of five requests per minute.

  • You can resize the app window by simply dragging it from an edge.

April 22, 2022

Monotype Fonts.

Better manage your imported fonts

  • New filters refine searching of imported fonts. Filter by web fonts/desktop fonts and private tags.

  • You can now update license counts in bulk and apply private tags to multiple imported fonts in one go.

  • Private tags applied to imported font families will be auto applied to all styles under that family, and any private tag applied to a style will be visible on the font family row.

  • Some bug fixes were also included with this release.

Improvements to My Library

  • All new web projects will be optimized for better performance and include:

    • Support for “font-display:swap” property in the @font-face declaration of all web fonts, so that in case of latency, the text can render with default system fonts on the web page in the meantime and page loads faster without having to wait for the font files to load completely from CDN.

    • Use of pre-connect URL in the embed code CSS, so that DNS resolution is preempted and web fonts load faster.

    • Loading WOFF2 files before WOFF files, which are up to 60 percent more efficient and decrease load times.

    • Enabling OpenType features by default so that a user not using subsetting can make use of all properties of the web font in the project, instead of having to explicitly enable it from subsetting modal.

  • The synced fonts page now shows the total number of families and the total number of fonts currently synced to the user's machine. The list of synced fonts is now paginated.

  • The "Sync all" button now displays the total number of fonts that will be synced by clicking it.

  • Emails that go out to users when a new library list or project is shared with them will now include the name of the company in addition to the name of the user who shared the list/project, to avoid confusing users with multiple company accounts/logins.

Improvements to Browse and Family pages

  • Preview pangrams will now be the same across font families, to more easily compare different fonts.

  • Preview font size selected by a user will be maintained while they browse, so their preference is remembered next time they land on a Browse page.

  • Hovering over a variable font will show an animated preview of the variable font demonstrating its variable properties.

  • You can now expand multiple family rows at once to view all styles, without collapsing any previously expanded family.

  • When styles under a family are expanded, they will now be lazy loaded for better experience.

  • A "Select all" feature has been added in a limited capacity to allow users to select all filtered fonts at once and perform bulk actions. The "Select all" option will appear only when the filtered results are less than or equal to 50 families, as that is the maximum limit for bulk actions.

  • Private tags applied to families will be auto applied to all of the styles under them, and any private tag applied to a style will be visible on the family row.

Improvements to the Manage section (for company admins)

  • While deactivating a user, company admins can now select a new user to be the owner of all the assets created by the user being deactivated.

  • Company admins can now revoke an invite sent that has not yet been accepted by the user, instead of waiting for 14 days for the invite to auto-cancel. There is also a new tab available on the "Users" page where all pending invites will be listed, instead of the Active users tab.

  • Roles that are not in use or assigned to any user can now be deleted.

  • User email addresses can now be updated by Company Admins, as long as the new email address is not associated with another user on any Monotype Fonts customer account. In this case, company admins will have to ask our Support Team to merge the two users.

  • A new role permission has been added to restrict freelancers or contractors so they can only see or share assets with those that are part of the teams assigned to them, rather than being able to see the entire company structure.

  • The new top header with universal search bar is now available on all pages of the platform, including the Manage section.

Other improvements:

  • New trial users will be asked to self-identify themselves as Individuals, Agencies, or Businesses when they log in for the first time. This will enable personalized onboarding and support, as well as suggestions of curated plans for them.

  • Users can now send a request to their admins to invite teammates to their company account for collaboration. Admins will be notified of such requests and will see all such requests under the "Invited" tab on the Users page, from which they can approve or reject any request. An invitation link will be sent to the new user when the admin approves the request.

Monotype Fonts.

Font inspiration and artwork on Browse and font family pages

  • New "Inspiration view" on Browse where artwork or font-in-use examples are displayed instead of preview text.

  • Artwork section added to font family pages below the Type Tester, where you can see multiple artworks or font-in-use examples.

  • Improved UI on the Grid view and Inspiration view

  • Type Tester, font size slider, family sorter, and page header on Browse are now sticky and don't disappear on scrolling.

Universal search bar and new navigation bar

  • The search bar has been moved to the top header navigation bar and can now be universally accessed from any page.

  • The top header navigation bar has been revamped to include the search bar and Resources section. The secondary header (previously the Discover section) has been removed.

  • The Help Center link has been moved to the user profile drop-down.

Improvements to My Library

  • My Library page load times have been reduced considerably when there are a large number of assets created or shared with a user.

  • Font family counts in addition to font counts will be displayed on font list, web project, and digital ad pages.

  • For CCJK web fonts, if subsetted heuristically using language-based subsetting, web font size will be displayed as a range of smallest to largest subset, instead of a sum of all subsets to avoid confusion on file size and performance of heuristically subsetted web fonts.

  • The directory structure of web font folders and web font names in the WFS v2 self-hosting kits has been changed to be more meaningful and easy to understand.

Other improvements:

  • Trial users will now be redirected to the "Plans" page when they click on the upgrade button on the top header.

  • When selecting a custom date for usage data in the Usage tab, the last 14 days will be shown by default.

  • Ungated Help Center and Resources: All Help Center and Resources pages can now be accessed without needing a login. This allows prospects to go through our studio content and functional resources.

  • Better discovery for variable fonts: Variable fonts filter added to the search page to filter the families that contain variable fonts.

  • Type Tester and text size slider have been added to My Library pages (including font lists, web projects, digital ads) for better previews.

  • Text size slider added to Search page to adjust the text sizes on font and family rows.

  • My Library assets can now be created on the fly directly from the “Add to” modal.

  • While fetching search results, the search filters will be disabled until the results have loaded.

  • SSO users can now onboard through the Desktop app, with no need to log into the web portal first.

  • Multiple users can be added to a team in a single go.

  • New users can be assigned teams while being invited to join the company.

  • Users can be restricted from creating any My Library asset based on role permission, including font lists, folders, web projects, and digital ads.

  • Admins can now export a list of all users in their company or a filtered subset.

  • On the SSO tab, the list of all unmapped SSO groups can now be collapsed/expanded for a neater view.

August 12, 2021

Monotype Fonts.

  • Enterprise analytics: Admins can now view the number of syncs and downloads for fonts and font families on their account by going to the "Usage" tab under the "Manage" section.

  • Web Font Service 2.0 powered Web Projects and Digital ads are here.

    • The new web font technology helps web fonts load faster on your websites while making it easier for your web developers to work with web fonts.

    • For ease of use, we have kept the experience and flow of creating, managing, and hosting the web font projects the same as before, with new tools and enhancements being added subtly to the existing flow.

  • More subsetting options:

    • All Characters subsetting option has been introduced, which will include all glyphs supported by the web font in the project kit. This will be the default subsetting for all web fonts.

    • Common Character subsetting has been enhanced to include all glyphs and characters of Basic Latin, Latin-1 supplement, and Latin Extended-A Unicode blocks to provide better coverage for the most frequently used characters of Latin-based languages.

    • Language-based subsetting has been enhanced to support subsetting for all major languages and writing systems of the world.

    • Dynamic subsetting for CJK web fonts has been retired due to its dependence on JavaScript and slower font load times impacting the performance of the websites. JavaScript embed code has been retired as well.

    • CJK web fonts can now be subsetted using any of the available subsetting options. Our recommendation would be to subset based on languages.

    • Heuristics-based subsetting for CJK web fonts.

      • While using language-based subsetting, if any of the CJK languages are selected, then the web font will be heuristically subsetted automatically for faster performance.

      • Heuristic subsetting provides pre-sliced subsets of characters based on the frequency of usage of the characters in a language. This helps browsers to quickly render fonts in right style, as the CDN delivers only the subset that contains the requested glyphs, instead of having to subset the font file in real time as the browser makes requests for each set of glyphs, causing the browser to take more time to render the text in correct style in the case of dynamic subsetting.

      • Web projects containing CJK web fonts can now be used with CSS embed code and/or can be self hosted.

    • Fewer styles enabled by default for better performance

    • Standard font family names and additional font properties.

    • Faster Self-Hosting Kit download.

    • Better page view and impressions tracking.

    • Use of Unicode ranges to load font subsets for faster font rendering.

    • Third-party (imported) web fonts hosting support (coming soon!)
