Font metadata
Font metadata is the information that describes various attributes of a font style, such as PostScript name, also known as (includes typographic naming conventions), and material number.
PostScript Name
A system-level technical name assigned to each font style, commonly used across design apps, PDFs, operating systems, and printing systems to uniquely identify and render the font.
Also Known As
Sometimes fonts may have multiple names depending on where they’re used, such as design tools, documents, or internal systems. This section lists those alternate names to help you identify the font easily.
Material Number
An internal Monotype identifier that helps manage, organize, and track font styles across licensing, systems, and integrations. Not typically used by designers.
How does font metadata improve search functionality?
Font metadata improves search efficiency on the Monotype platform by providing additional information about the font like PostScript name, also known as, and material number. This information is both visible and searchable across Monotype Fonts’ inventory and imported fonts.

Use the following steps to search using font metadata:
Log in to the Monotype Fonts web platform.
Go to Browse > Fonts. The All fonts page displays.

You can also navigate to the bottom to access the font’s About section, where all relevant details are provided.
View assets that use a font family or style
You can view all assets that use a specific font family or a specific style directly from the font’s detail page. This helps you understand how fonts are used across your work without manually checking each asset.
Asset visibility depends on your user role and permissions, such as:
Company Admins and Limited Admins can see all shared company assets that use the selected font family or style, including folders.
On a Font Family page: admins see all assets using any style in the family.
On a Font Style page: admins see only assets using that style.
Visibility is not restricted by teams, divisions, or ownership.
Division Admins and regular users see only their own assets and assets shared with them.
Use the following steps to view the assets:
Go to Browse > Fonts.
Open a Font Family or select a Font Style within the family.
Font family page
Font style page
Click Assets.
Review the list of assets associated with that font.
Click an asset to view its details in your library (My library page).
What will I see after clicking on Assets tab?
Once you click Assets, you will see a list of assets (like font lists, web projects, or Digital ads) cards linked to the font family or style.
It also includes filters for viewing:
Note: You can view only the assets that you have permission to access. All these assets are automatically updated if a family or font style is added or removed using the details page. And a message displays if no assets currently use the font.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Why would I want to see which assets use a specific font?
You may need to understand how widely a font is used before making decisions—such as updating a design, replacing a font, checking license impact, or preparing project hand‑offs. Seeing all related assets in one place helps you avoid overlooking something important.
Q2. How do I view the assets that use a font family or a font style?
Go to Browse > Fonts.
Open a Font Family or a Font Style within that family.
Select the Assets tab on the page.
The asset cards show where the font appears across your work or shared projects.
Q3. What kinds of assets appear in the list?
The list includes:
Font lists
Web projects
Digital ads
Folders are not displayed in this view because font families and styles are added to the font lists, web projects, or digital ads associated with each folder.
However, the assets contained within those folders remain accessible. You can find them under their respective sections like Font list, Web project, or Digital ads and continue to access them directly through My library section.
Q4. Why do I only see some of the assets I expected?
The asset list reflects your access level. You’ll see:
Personal assets you created
Assets shared with you
Note: If any asset is missing, then it might belong to another team or require additional permissions.
Q5. Can I switch between personal assets and shared assets?
Yes. Use the filters within the Assets tab to toggle between:
Personal
Shared with me
Q6. What do Admins see compared to regular users?
Company Admins and Limited Admins can see all shared company assets that use the font family or style, including those inside folders.
On the Font Family page, they see assets using any style in that family.
On the Font Style page, they see only assets using that specific style.
Division Admins and Regular Users see only the assets they have permission to access.
Q7. What does it mean if the Assets tab shows an empty state?
This means the font hasn’t been used in any asset yet—or you don’t have permission to view assets that do use it.
It’s also a good signal that the font is safe to modify, replace, or explore without affecting existing work.
Q8. Will the list of assets update if I add or remove fonts from a project?
Yes. The asset list updates automatically as fonts are added to or removed from font lists, web projects, or digital ads using the font style or family details page.
You don’t need to refresh anything manually.
Q9. How does this help me during project hand‑offs or audits?
This view gives you a clear picture of:
Which projects depend on a font
Whether a font swap will impact other teams
Where licensing changes might have downstream effects
Note: Downstream effect refers to situations when changing the licensing of a font (such as, removing a font from your plan, switching tiers, or adjusting entitlements) can impact other projects or teams that already rely on that font.
It reduces the risk of missing dependencies and makes hand‑offs more reliable.
10. How does this feature complement search and browsing?
When you find a font through Search or Browse, the Assets tab helps you understand context and usage.
Instead of just discovering fonts, you can evaluate how they fit into your existing work and whether they’re suitable for reuse or replacement.
