Font tiering is Monotype’s unique approach to categorize our vast font inventory for better identification of the type of font (such as standard, variable, or CCJK) used by our customers.
All the fonts on Monotype Fonts are structured based on the following tiers:
This section will help you learn how to
Identify a font tier
It is easy to identify the tier type of a font.
Standard tier: All the fonts without a star icon belong to a standard tier.
Variable tier: All those fonts that are not in the standard tier have a star icon on them. And if labeled as Var, they belong to the variable tier. You can hover over the star icon to know its tier type and production font count.
CCJK tier: All the CCJK fonts have a star icon on them. Hover over the star icon to learn about the tier type and production font count of your font.
Using a font tier
Categorizing fonts in tiers does not change the functionality, attribute, and performance of fonts. So, all the procedures to use the fonts remain the same.
For example, a variable font will remain a variable font (with all its attributes like greater variability, compression, improved performance, and dynamic text effects) even after it gets a star icon.
So, all the procedures (such as search, pair, add to My Library, sync, or favorite) to use the fonts remain the same.

What does a standard font tier mean?
Standard tier includes a font that does not have a star icon. These fonts are counted as one production font when used commercially.
What does a variable font tier mean?
A variable font tier includes the variable fonts. All the fonts in this tier are labeled as Var and marked with a star icon. Hover over the star icon to learn about the tier type and production font count of these fonts.
What does a CCJK font tier mean?

What are the criteria to distinguish between different font tiers?
All the fonts that do not have a star icon belong to a standard tier. If there is a star icon on the font, then hover over the star icon to learn about the tier type of the font.
Is it possible for a font to be associated with more than one tier?
No. For better identification of fonts, each font is uniquely associated with a single tier.
What will be the tier type of a variable CCJK font?
A variable type CCJK font will belong to a Variable tier. If a font is classified as CCJK and is also a variable font, then the variable attribute takes precedence over the CCJK classification.
Even in regions where CCJK is set to a value equivalent to one production font, the variable attribute remains dominant. And this font’s count will be equivalent to the value of the variable production font. Whereas the non-variable CCJK fonts in these regions will be counted as one production font.
