Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Custom Monotype Font?

Custom Monotype fonts are unique fonts that are either created (bespoke) or customized (modification of existing font) by the Monotype Studio team for specific users based on their Monotype Fonts agreement.

Why should I buy custom fonts?

Monotype Fonts has a vast font library. However sometimes, you may require a modified version of a certain font or a completely new font depending on your creative pursuit, brand guideline, changing font trends, business requirements, or some other reason.

There are many tools in the industry that may help you create your own font. But the output of these tools may lack expertise and finesse. Thus, these fonts may show some inconsistency across languages or consumers and may behave unexpectedly in some environments. And it might not be safe and secure to use such fonts in your project. Moreover, there could be unknown licensing issues while using these fonts.

Monotype’s custom font service is useful in many ways:

  • Fonts having unique brand identity

  • Reduced upfront costs for custom work

  • Access to Monotype Studio’s design team

  • Simple license structure built from the existing Monotype Fonts agreement

What is Custom Type design?

Custom font, custom type design, or bespoke refers to a unique font that is created just for you and aligns with your brand guidelines. It agrees with your font requirement brief. Monotype Studio team experts can help you create a custom font family that truly represents your brand.

What is Type Modification and what types of modifications can I request if I don’t pursue a fully bespoke font?

Type Modification refers to a new font created by modifying (altering or extending) existing fonts and families. You may require this to add functionality and/or to achieve your unique brand voice.

There are several ways to modify an existing font. Examples include:

  • Renaming a font

  • Modifying the spacing or kerning

  • Swapping default glyphs with alternate forms

  • Adding new weights or styles to an existing family

  • Adding symbols or other character set extensions

What is not included in custom font service?

Custom font service is NOT applicable to:

  • Designs other than Sans Serif style

  • Variable fonts

  • Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, Hebrew, or other character sets

  • CCJK fonts

  • Fonts for which ownership would be transferred to the customer

  • Non- Monotype IP

If you need any of the above, please contact your Monotype account manager or click the chat icon in the lower right corner of this page.
