Monotype Fonts’ AI Search is an intelligent search capability that uses artificial intelligence to help you efficiently find and explore fonts or font families within the Monotype Fonts library.

It makes your creative process easier, more efficient, and intuitive by understanding natural language queries/prompts instead of relying on keywords.

How it works

Instead of typing keywords like bold or script, you can describe your search criteria in natural language. Simply type your font need (search prompt like the mood, style, or context of the font you’re looking for), and AI Search will do the rest.

AI Search provides intelligent recommendations based on your prompt (search query), our systems and best knowledge. Your input (prompts) may be processed through third-party systems, including enterprise ChatGPT to enhance search results without using your data for training.

Examples:

  • Luxurious calligraphy fonts for premium packaging

  • Modern sans-serif fonts for campaigns

  • I need a futuristic, minimalist font that works well in tech product UI

  • Show me fonts similar to Helvetica

Using AI Search

Follow the steps below to use AI Search for font discovery:

  1. Click AI Search on the top inline search bar of the Monotype Fonts web platform.

    The AI Search page displays.

  2. Enter your font needs and click or press Enter.

Note: You can also click on the font prompt suggestions available below the search input bar.

Tip: To stop the current search, click in the search input bar (when the search is in progress).

AI Search analyzes your font needs, explores our font inventory, gathers font recommendations and inspirations, and displays the search results.

Your search query and the insight displays with font recommendations.

  3. Review the search results. You can rephrase your search query to refine your search results.

Tip: You can add more context to your search query or ask something new.

For example, you can use the chat-based refinements that maintain the context of your previous inputs, allowing you to refine results with prompts such as “show only serif” or “make them more legible.”

To further refine your search results, add follow ups in the search bar or start a completely new search by clicking on Start New Chat + icon.

Note: Closing the chat window or refreshing the browser page will clear your chat history.

Available search categories for AI Search

Our AI Search system supports the below categories of prompts:

Category

Description

Specific Font/Foundry Name

This category captures prompts where the user already knows the name of a specific font or foundry. Their goal is direct retrieval, either to see a particular typeface like 'Helvetica' or to browse the entire catalog of a known entity like 'Colophon Foundry'.

Known References & Similar Fonts

This category is for prompts where a user has a known font as a starting point and is looking for alternatives. Their goal could be to find a free version, something with a slightly different feel, or simply to discover new options with a similar aesthetic.

Font Characteristics / Style

This is one of the most fundamental categories, covering prompts that describe a font by its tangible, visual attributes. The user is thinking in typographic terms like "bold," "condensed," "serif," "geometric," or "high contrast."

Use Case / Task-Based Prompts

This covers prompts where the user's primary goal is to find a font that is fit for a specific purpose or context. They are thinking about the font's job, whether for a 'restaurant menu', a 'mobile app UI', or a 'professional football team rebrand'.

Mood / Brand Personality

This is for prompts where the user is trying to match a font to a desired personality, character, or general feeling. They use descriptive adjectives like 'friendly', 'luxurious', 'playful', or 'professional' to define the brand's intended voice.

Emotional & Aesthetic Direction

This category is for prompts driven by feeling and abstract aesthetics. The user is trying to capture a specific mood, emotion, or poetic concept, using evocative language like 'fonts that feel like falling snow' or 'a typeface that feels contemplative and quiet'.

Historical & Cultural Aesthetics

This is for prompts inspired by the past or a specific cultural context. The user wants a font that evokes a distinct historical era like the '1960s', an art movement like 'Art Deco', or a design tradition like 'Swiss Modernism'.

Multilingual / Global Support

This category is for prompts where the primary requirement is support for specific languages, scripts, or characters from around the world, such as 'fonts with good Vietnamese accent marks' or 'Art Deco fonts with Cyrillic'.

Persona Based

This category is for prompts framed from the perspective of a specific user with a defined role or profession. They describe who they are and what they need, for example, "I’m a UX designer..." or "As a startup founder building a pitch deck..."

Font Pairing

This category is for prompts specifically about finding two or more fonts that work well together. The user is looking for harmonious or interestingly contrasting combinations for headlines, body text, and other typographic roles.

Best practices for search queries

Here are few tips to use the AI Search to get your desired search results.

  • Be as descriptive as you can: You can include mood, tone, context, or any other font detail.
Example: Minimalist sans-serif fonts for a tech startup logo.

  • Use natural language: Ask questions like “What fonts pair well with Helvetica?”

  • Add style attributes: Specify weight, width, or mood.
Example: Bold condensed fonts for headlines.

  • Experiment with variations: You can initiate a new search in AI Search by rephrasing or adding details if results aren’t perfect.
