Using Monotype Desktop App v7.x.x

Learn about the app interface, settings option, and troubleshooting tools

To use the Monotype Desktop App v7.x.x effectively you need to understand its user interface. This section describes the options available with the app interface and the settings page.

Note: Refer to the plugins section to learn more about the plugins support available in the app and steps to manage it.

Monotype Desktop App interface

This section describes the options available on Monotype Desktop App v7.x.x interface.

Option

Description

Username

Indicates the username you have used to log in to the app.

Open App menu icon

Click to open the menu. Available options are mentioned below.

Settings

Click to open Settings page. You can use this option to:

  • open the Troubleshoot pane

  • collect the app logs for troubleshooting

  • manage the available plugins

  • change the default language settings

Switch workspace

Click to switch workspace.

Note: This option is only available when you have more than one workspace.

My Account

Click to open a web page that allows you to view and manage your account details. For example, personal information (name, email, and photo), addresses, companies linked to your account (only for admin users), orders, and help & support.

Help center

Click to open our help center if you want to learn more about Monotype Fonts.

About the app

Click to view the app details. For example, app version, interface version, release notes, or acknowledgements.

Check for updates

Click to check for and install updates if available.

Sign out

Click to sign out from the app.

Quit app

Click to quit app. Quitting an app is different from sign out. When you quit the app, fonts will continue to be synced on your machine for about 30 days.

Note: You can also click on the icon to quit app.

Monotype Fonts.

Click to open the Browse page on Monotype Fonts web platform.

Search icon

Click to open or close the search. When open you are able to view a search bar. You can enter a keyword to search a font, folder, or list from synced fonts and your library.

Refresh fonts icon

Click to refresh the fonts available in synced and library tabs.

Notifications icon

Click to view latest notifications from Monotype Fonts.

Synced fonts tab

Indicates a tab showing all the fonts that you have synced.

Filter & sort icon

Click to open or close the filter & sort pane. It allows you to sort (alphabetically or recently added) all your synced fonts. You can also filter the sync fonts based on their style, visual properties, language, or source.

Unsync font icon

Click to unsync all your synced font(s).

Note: The unsync action removes all your synced fonts. The unsynced fonts will not be retrievable from any interface or through support mechanisms. Monotype recommends that you unsync by family or by font.

Use this to activate or deactivate the selected font(s).

Type testing

Enter your own text to test the type.
Keyboard shortcuts are available for type testing.

Click to favorite / unfavorite a font.

Unsync list / font / family

Click to un-sync the selected list / font / family

Font name

Click to open the font/family page.

My Library tab

This tab allows you to access folders and lists that have been created by you. You can add fonts to these lists through the Monotype Fonts web interface.

Note: Web projects and digital ads continue to redirect you to the web interface and are inaccessible in the app.

Activity

Click to view the activity on your library such as favorites.

Shared with me

Indicates all the font lists, folders, digital ads, or web projects shared with you.

Click to open the corresponding web page.

Indicates that the font is marked as production font.


Settings option

The Settings option allows you to open the Troubleshoot or Plugins page. It also allows you to change the language of the app.

Note: Default language of the app is based on the regional and language settings of your system.

To open Settings page either click the settings icon shown on the log in page or open app menu icon after logging in to the app.


Troubleshoot

The Monotype Desktop App also includes troubleshooting tools to help you detect and resolve common network access issues, including:

  • Connection to the Monotype Fonts web platform

  • External app showdown

  • Font syncing

  • Internet connectivity-related problems

You can open the Troubleshoot pane from Settings > Troubleshoot > Open or by clicking on the settings icon . The options and utilities in the pane are described in the below table.

Option/utility

Description

Show logs

Click to view automatically captured logs of various components of the application and HLS (MonotypeFontsService). It is a zipped log package that can be shared with support and development teams to troubleshoot an issue.

You will need to provide these logs to Monotype support team when it reaches out to help troubleshoot any issues.

Note: These logs need to be collected manually even if the issue is with installation.

Reset app

Click to clear user data from the system. This will log you out and all your fonts will be unsynced.

Device ID

Indicates the identification number of your device where the app is installed.

Unique ID

Indicates a unique identifier for the user’s machine that can be shared with development team to locate server logs.

Version

Indicates the currently installed version of Monotype Desktop App.

Helper service

Indicates the status of the BS (masSync) that delivers fonts to the user’s machine when syncing.

Fix

This option is only visible when the helper service (BS) is not working.

Click to restore the app to its original state.

To confirm check the system’s activity monitor and ensure that:

  • masSync and masMonitor processes are running

  • only one instance each of the above processes is running

Network access

Refresh

Click to restart the network access checks.

Internet connection

Checks and notifies in case of issues with internet connectivity.

Enterprise web connection

Checks and notifies if Monotype’s web services are not accessible by the app.

Trusted certificate checks

Checks and notifies availability of all trusted certificates for the app.

Proxy settings

The following messages may be shown under the Proxy settings section:

Auto proxy applied

Indicates that proxy is set at the system level and not within the application.

Proxy configured needs authentication

Indicates incorrect proxy credentials in the app.

No message is shown

Indicates that proxy settings are correct.

Log collection

Monotype Desktop App makes it easy for you to collect and share log files with us, helping our support team to efficiently troubleshoot any issues that might arise.

To automatically create a zipped package of the log files:

Click Settings > Troubleshoot > Open > Show logs to generate logs.

Or, you may also collect and share log files manually from the following locations:

Language

Use the Language option to select your preferred language. Monotype Desktop App v7.x.x supports English, German, and French language.
