Before installing Monotype Fonts Desktop App v7.1.0:

  1. Uninstall the earlier versions of the app.

  2. Verify all the prerequisites mentioned in the compatibility matrix.

  3. Proxy settings and enablers

  4. Download the installer.

  • You can access the download links from our help center or by selecting Download the Desktop App from your profile menu in Monotype Fonts platform.

  • The macOS application may need your device credentials to install the application.

  • Monotype Desktop App will auto update to v7.1.0. You can try out this app and send us any relevant feedback at [email protected].

  • You can also contact support to request for v6.4.4 installer if you want to use the legacy app.

Proxy settings and enablers

The Monotype Desktop App v7.1.0 provides automated proxy support at the application level if your organization uses proxy servers in its network environment to regulate internet access.

For company admins:

If you are a Company Admin, you may choose to whitelist the following URLs. So that users in your company are not required to enter any proxy information in the Monotype Desktop App:

For end user:

If you are an end user, Monotype Desktop App v7.1.0 supports the following proxy types, which are picked up from the network configured within your PC:

  • HTTP/HTTP(S)

  • PAC file support

When you launch the application, it intelligently detects the proxy settings configured on your system. Our application seamlessly integrates with the existing proxy configurations, eliminating the need for manual setup within the app.

Installation

There are two ways to install Monotype Desktop App:

Self-installation

Use the following steps to install the downloaded application:

  1. Double-click the installer to start the installation.

  2. Click Continue.

    If you are a macOS user, you may have to provide your credentials to allow the application to be installed.

  3. Enter your credentials and click Install Software.

    The installer checks for and attempts to remove an older version of the application if it finds it.

    The installer will prompt you for access to your downloads folder.

  4. Click OK to complete the installation. The installer confirms installation.

  5. Click Close.

    The UI of the application gets downloaded. The download depends on the bandwidth of your ISP connection.

Remote deployment (Only for Company Administrators)

Company administrators can remotely deploy Monotype Desktop App v7.1.0 on their users’ machines using the same installation packages as provided in the self-installation section.

Mobile Device Management (MDM) tools like MS Intune or JAMF Pro are used to deploy these files remotely.

Block auto-updates (macOS)

You need to create a configuration profile in MS Intune that could help you to block the auto-updates for Monotype Desktop App while deploying the app on macOS. Use the following steps to create the configuration profile:

  1. Go to MS Intune admin center and click on Devices.

  2. Click macOS.

  3. Select Configuration profiles and click Create profile.

  4. Select profile type as templates and template name as preference file.

  5. Fill the information in preference file and in configuration profile. The domain name should be com.monotype.application.

  6. Upload the plist file.

  7. Click Next to open Assignment tab and add the security group.

  8. Click Next to open Review + create tab.

  9. Review and click Create to deploy the configuration file.

Deploy as a Line of Business App (using MS Intune on Windows 10)

Microsoft Intune supports a variety of application types and deployment scenarios on Windows 10 devices.

After adding an application to MS Intune, you can assign the app to users and devices.

This section provides details on the supported Windows scenarios and also explains important considerations while deploying Monotype Desktop App v7.1.0 on Windows 10.

Use the following steps to package Monotype Desktop App v7.1.0 in MS Intune:

  1. Open MS Intune and go to Apps.

  2. Click Windows.

  3. Click Add.

  4. Select Line-of-business app from App type.

  5. Select Windows (.msi, .appx, .appxbundle, .msix, .msixbundle) and click Select.

  6. Add the App package file and click OK.

    Note: The deployment of this application needs Microsoft Windows App Runtime 1.2 Minimum Version: 2000.707.2303.0. This dependency is installed by MSIX when a user manually installs it, but remote deployment needs this already installed. The screenshot below displays the warning thrown by Intune. Click here to refer to the installation instructions provided by Microsoft.

  7. Modify the details in name, description, and other options depending on the requirements of your organization.

  8. Click Next.

  9. Go to Assignments > Choose Assignment Group for Deployment Scope and click Select.

  10. Change Install context from User context to Device context and click Next.

  11. Click Review + create.

  12. Review Summary and click Create to successfully create the Windows app for Monotype Fonts.

    Note: Uploading the installer in MS Intune may take some time. Refer to Microsoft’s MSIX app deployment advice for Windows system for detail.

MS Intune (macOS)

Use the following steps to package Monotype Desktop App v7.1.0 in MS Intune for macOS:

  1. Open MS Intune and go to Apps.

  2. Click macOS.

  3. Click Add.

  4. Select Line-of-business app from App type.

  5. Select macOS (.pkg) and click Select.

  6. Add the App package file and click OK.

    Note: Modify the details in name, description, and other options depending on the requirements of your organization

  7. Add Monotype as Publisher.

    Note: We must only have one Bundle ID, com.monotype.monotype-fonts and respective application version 7.1.0.

  8. Click Next.

  9. Go to Assignments and select App-Monotype Fonts Mac-Deploy for Group.

  10. Click Next. The Review + create tab displays.

  11. Review summary and click Create to successfully create the macOS app for Monotype Fonts.

    Note: It may take some time to upload the installer in MS Intune.

JAMF Pro (Apple)

JAMF Pro is a comprehensive Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution tailored specifically for Apple devices. Remote administrators utilize JAMF Pro for streamlined management, configuration, and security of Apple devices across large-scale deployments.

With JAMF Pro, administrators can remotely deploy applications, enforce security policies, configure settings, and ensure compliance with organizational standards. Its centralized approach simplifies device management tasks, enhances efficiency, and provides granular control over Apple devices, making it an indispensable tool for remote administrators managing fleets of Apple devices within organizations.

Use the following steps to create the package for Monotype Desktop App v7.1.0 using JAMF Pro:

  1. Open JAMF Pro and click on settings icon .

  2. Enter Package in the search box.

  3. Click Packages to open the packages page.

  4. Click New to create a new package for the application.

  5. Enter the details of the application and click Choose File to upload the package.

  6. Click Save. The package gets uploaded.

  7. Create a policy to deploy the application. Go to home page of JAMF Pro and click Computers.

  8. Click Policies and then New.

  9. Enter the required information in the value section.

  10. Click Packages.

  11. Click Configure. List of packages displays with the package that you have uploaded.

  12. Click Add for the package you have uploaded. The package gets selected and it will ask for the distribution point.

  17. Click Save to complete the upload.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: In how many ways can I deploy the PKG package on macOS using MS Intune?

MS Intune MDM tool can deploy the PKG package on macOS in two ways:

  1. LOB (Line of Business): It is the standard way used by the companies.

  2. PKG (macOS): It is in private preview. Thus, the packages deployed through it gets installed every time it syncs with the company portal tool of MS Intune. For example, every minute in a continuous loop.

Q 2: Where does the configuration profile created from MS Intune appear?

The configuration profile [auto update list] created from MS Intune to block updates appears in the Rootlevel Lib folder of macOS and our app reads the settings from the same path (path: /Library/Managed Preferences).

Q3: Does MS Intune macOS deployment support Mac 10.15.7 OS?

MS Intune macOS deployment does not support Mac 10.15.7 OS. Only MacOS 11 and onwards can be used for remote deployments.

Q4: What is the behavior of the app observed after uninstallation is done through MS Intune MDM on Windows?

Note: For Windows OS, MS Intune MDM tool does not require a script for uninstallation. It has an uninstall/remove app option.

After uninstalling the Monotype desktop App v7.1.0 through MS Intune on Windows, the following behavior may be observed:

  • Sometimes the app remains running for other login users. To fix this issue, log out and restart the OS.

  • The workspace gets created even for the users who are not logged in but app was provisioned on the device. To delete their workspace, these users are required to log in to the OS. They may also need to logout or restart the OS.

  • Based on the MDM tool, the app may take up to eight hours to remove. This behavior was observed in Windows 11.

Q5: The deployment of MSIX installer package through MS Intune is failing. And it is preventing successful installation of App on target devices. I am getting the error, “This app package is not supported for installation by App installer because it uses certain restricted capabilities.” How can this issue be resolved?

We recommend following best practices for successful deployment of the app:

  • Package Validation: Begin by thoroughly validating the MSIX package itself to ensure it is correctly structured and signed. Verify that the package adheres to Microsoft's guidelines for MSIX packaging.

  • MS Intune Configuration: Review the Intune configuration settings for deploying the MSIX package. Ensure that the deployment settings are aligned with the intended installation scenario (e.g., per-user or per-device) and that any dependencies are correctly specified.

  • Side Loading Settings: When deploying applications outside the Microsoft Store, it's essential to configure side loading settings correctly on target devices. Ensure that side loading is enabled on devices where the MSIX package is being deployed. Side loading settings can be configured through Group Policy, MDM policies, or manually on each device.

  • Compatibility Testing: Conduct comprehensive compatibility testing on the MSIX package to ensure it functions as expected on the target devices, especially considering factors like OS version, hardware, and dependencies.

  • Logs and Diagnostics: Enable detailed logging and diagnostics during the deployment process to capture additional information that can assist in troubleshooting and resolving deployment issues.

  • Documentation Review: Ensure that the package documentation, such as the ".appinstaller" file and any accompanying documentation, is up to date and accurate.

Q6: Why is the app deployment on Windows devices failing?

Ensure that the MSIX build which you are using is latest. Use the following steps for this:

  • Naming convention of the application must consist of unique identifier.

  • Standardize the name as AppName-Version-Language-Revision. For example, Monotype-V7-EN-R1.

Q7: Does Monotype Desktop App v7.1.0 require a restart after upgrade?

Yes. Application prompts end user that restart is required. Ensure that you have configured restart after the application upgrade.

Q8: The deployment is successful but Monotype Desktop App reinstalls itself every 7 to 8 seconds or as and when the macOS check-in to MS Intune. Why?

This is a Bundle Identifier issue. We recommend that you use the Line of Business approach to deploy PKG package to resolve this issue.

Q9: Why am I getting Monotype Desktop app build error while uploading the PKG in line of business approach?

  • We recommend to compile the package with the standard best practice used by Apple.

  • Ensure that all build number and package version is updated as per standards.

  • We refer to edge, chromium, and zoom application as a reference and replicated the same in Monotype Desktop App which resolved the issue.

Q10: Monotype app is installed correctly in endpoint but MS Intune shows status as Failed. Why? How can this issue be resolved?

Possible reason: App version listed in MS Intune could be incorrect. For example, it may show v25.3.0.0 rather than showing v7.0.0 or v8.0.0. This issue is identified as Multiple Bundle ID. We recommended that monotype font bundle ID must be on dictionary value 0 rather than 6.

Fix: Manually delete other Bundle ID from MS Intune Detection rule to resolve this issue. App version will get corrected after removing all other bundle IDs.

Q11: Monotype Desktop app configuration profile to disable auto update failed to install. Why?

Possible reason: You have directly uploaded the preference file to MS Intune.

Recommendation: Only add key-value pairs in MS Intune for preference file which will help in successful deployment.
