The Monotype Fonts plugin for Adobe InDesign offers two main functions tailored to the needs of creatives:

  1. Detection of missing fonts.

  2. Auto activation of missing fonts in the format used when the InDesign document was originally created.

The InDesign plugin addresses the issue of missing fonts, which is one of the most common technical challenges that creatives face. By detecting and automatically activating missing fonts, the plugin facilitates collaboration, reduces the risk of reflows, and minimizes the time creatives spend on reworks and technical troubleshooting.

This guide will walk you through the installation process for the Indesign plugin if you have to do it independently of the main application. Alternatively, this serves as indicative directions for someone who is looking to independently deploy the plugin through MDM tooling. Please follow the steps below to ensure it is installed successfully.

Step 1: Download the Plugin

  1. Click on the download link for the plugin zip file.

  2. Save the zip file on your computer for easy access.

Step 2: Install the Plugin

  1. Locate the installation directory for your InDesign application. By default, it can be found in the following locations:

    1. Windows: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign [version]

    2. Mac: /Applications/Adobe InDesign [version]

  2. Extract the contents of the downloaded zip file (for example, in the “adobe_indesign_plugin” folder)

  3. Identify the version of InDesign that you are using. Look for the corresponding version folder within the extracted contents.

For example, if you are using InDesign 2022, navigate to the "adobe_indesign_plugin\2022" folder:

    Windows

    Mac

  4. Copy or move the plugin folder/file to the appropriate plugin folder in your InDesign installation directory. For example:

    Windows

    Paste the "Monotype_Native_Plugin" folder into "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign [version]\Plug-Ins":

    Mac

Paste the "Monotype_Native_InDesignPlugin" file into "/Applications/Adobe InDesign [version]/Plug-Ins":

  5. While the file is being copied, you may be prompted to provide administrative privileges or confirm the overwrite of existing files. If prompted, proceed accordingly.

  6. Launch or restart InDesign.
